Our Response: The Overturning Of Roe V Wade

We are mortified.

While we aren’t blindsided due to the May leak, we are absolutely mortified at the actual overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court.

As many have pointed out, young women who will soon become adults will now have fewer rights than their grandmothers and their mothers. Mind-blowing.

It’s a horribly dark day when a 50-year-old decision that protected women has been uplifted as abortion care is pulled out from under our feet.

It’s dumbfounding, and no doubt will mean terrible things for girls and women.

Based on past trends in places with fewer abortion rights, we foresee:

  • More deaths as women are forced to carry risky pregnancies to term.
  • More injury as women inevitably find backdoor methods to have an abortion.
  • More frustration, distress, and trauma as women lose the right to make personal choices regarding their own bodies.
  • More systemic oppression against Black and Brown people, and minorities who already had fewer abortion rights.

But let’s not allow this stunning blow to, well, keep us stunned for too long.

While our fundamental rights have been stamped on, we can come back.

How? By learning, advocating, and most importantly, by taking action.

One way to do so is by donating to Global Fund for Girls, our non-profit dedicated to the fight for birth justice, reproductive coercion, and the fight against child sexual abuse and gender-based violence.

We’d also like to invite our readers and all interested persons to join our open dialogue discussion panel covering reproductive justice, abortion rights and birth justice freedom on July 21st at 12pm EST.

It was a group of mad men who made this decision. Notwithstanding, we won’t allow their madness to control or take over us. There will be change, and with unity and focus, it will come soon.
